CARTaGENE’s Optimization Phase ended on March 1st 2008. During this phase, CARTaGENE recruited 223 participants. This first recruitment was aimed at 400 individuals aged 40 to 69 years, randomly selected from the Montreal and Sherbrooke areas. The goal was to test the methods, tools and instruments for participant recruitment and data and sample (blood and urine) collection.
The Optimization Phase received approval from six (6) institutions: the Faculté de Médecine of l’Université de Montréal, the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) (Université de Montréal Hospital Centre), the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Sherbrooke (CHUS) (Université de Sherbrooke Hospital Centre), the Centre hospitalier Charles-LeMoyne (CHCLM) (Charles-Lemoyne Hospital Centre), the St-Mary’s Hospital (was not activated), and the Institut de la statistique du Québec (Québec Institute of Statistics).
Available contact information for the participants enabled us to reach only 67.3% of selected individuals. However, 37.4% of those contacted participated in the project, and 95.9% of those agreed to be re-contacted for future research. Moreover, 41.3% of the participants also took part in the genealogical option. The excellent cooperation and high satisfaction of participants indicate foreseeable success for the next phase (Phase A).
The recruitment objective for Phase A is 20 000 participants aged 40 to 69 years, randomly selected in the census metropolitan areas of Montreal, Quebec, Chicoutimi and Sherbrooke. Ten (10) healthcare facilities have been approached to receive Phase A of the project. The project will only start once all approvals from the concerned research ethics committees have been obtained.
