CARTaGENE is a research platform at CHU Sainte-Justine aimed at providing researchers with the ressources to facilitate their research on human health and disease. CARTaGENE is made up of both biological samples and data on the health and lifestyle of 40,000 Quebecois aged between 40-69 years. Genotyping and sequencing data are gradually being added to the CARTaGENE database in order to identify the genetic causes of diseases in the Quebec population.
Responsability
In collaboration with the scientific direction of CARTaGENE, the bioinformatician will participate in the quality control and analysis of the genetic data generated on the participants of the cohort (e.g. pan-genomic genotyping (GWAS), pan-exonic/-genomic sequencing). For example, the bioinformatician will set up standardized methods to process raw data, align sequences or make variant calls. The bioinformatician will also be able to participate in the creation of databases of genetic variation or of genetic association results, as well as writing scientific articles and presenting at meetings.
Additional responsibilities include managing computing resources (web applications and servers), writing documentation, quality assurance and writing automated tests, and code maintenance. A willingness to work in close collaboration with members of the CARTaGENE team as well as with the community of geneticists in Quebec is essential. The candidate must learn quickly and voluntarily, have an excellent sense of organization, be able to work independently and communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Requirements
A BA/BS (with >3 years of professional experience) or master in bioinformatics or a related field
Good knowledge of scripting (Python, shell) and programming (java, C++) languages
Some experience with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL)
Knowledge of basic statistical models and familiarity with R
A strong university portfolio, or programming experience in bioinformatics
Functional bilingualism
Knowledge with Linux operating systems and shell scripting
Desired Skills
Knowledge of batch-queuing system for high-performance computing (e.g. OGS)
Knowledge of genomics, genetics or molecular biology
